SYLVIA DURRANT - The Bird Lady
I'm nominating our recently retired Bird Lady, Sylvia Durrant, for the 2019 Senior New Zealander of the Year award. Please support my nomination by clicking below and signing a petition.
From August to March, for 35 years, Sylvia worked 12 hours a day, 7 days a week feeding baby birds every 2 hours. In the winter months, she nursed native birds back to health and exercised injured penguins. She has meticulous records detailing each of the 140,000 birds she cared for over that time. All of her work was voluntary.
Sylvia has inspired hundreds of young people who volunteered for her over the years, instilling a sense of community and selflessness in all who worked with her. She is most deserving of this prestigious award.
Simon Bridges visits East Coast Bays
As part of his national tour, Simon Bridges came to the East Coast Bays and spoke to almost 400 people at the Browns Bay Bowling Club.
He shared his personal story, his hopes for New Zealand's future and answered a lot of robust questions from the audience. It was a fantastic meeting - thank you to everyone who came along.
Deep Creek Planting
The Deep Creek Restoration Society was formed in 2017 by a bunch of passionate locals. Their aim is to restore the creek at Waiake to its former glory when children could enjoy the safe, clean water and paddle to a waterfall that lies hidden nearby.Â
So far, the Society has held half a dozen planting and weeding days with dozens of locals turning out to pitch in. Deep Creek Brew Bar was amazing providing all the refreshments!Â
If you’d like to help out, head to Restore Deep Creek on Facebook and like their page.
